Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Also known as SMP

Scalp Micropigmentation is a permanent cosmetic tattoo applied superficially to the scalp skin.

SMP mimics the very short hairs of a closely shaved scalp and can be used in patients who are either unwilling to undergo hair transplant surgery or are unsuitable for hair transplantation (usually as a result of inadequate donor hairs).

Properly performed SMP creates a natural look even upon close inspection. It uses a permanent organic, non-metallic ink which has several advantages over other inks. Firstly, the permanent ink does not fade to green or blue over time as do temporary inks. Secondly the non-metallic ink allows patients to have a head MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) procedure in the future if required.

The non-surgical procedure is carried out by experienced hair restoration doctors who understand the intricacies of proper hairline design together with qualified staff. Local anaesthesia is used to ensure a completely painless experience and sedation is also offered to patients if desired.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process is safe as we utilise single-use disposable needles together with specially formulated organic ink. It is a different technique to traditional tattooing as the ink is applied very superficially to ensure only tiny dots are deposited which mimic hairs. The colour of the ink is decided upon to match the colour and tone of each patients shaved hair beneath the skin.

The Scalp Micropigmentation treatment typically takes 2-4 hours per session depending on your degree of hair loss. Most clients can expect between 2-4 sessions to complete their treatment depending on the extent of hair loss or scarring. These treatments are usually spaced about 10-20 days apart.

After completion of your treatment (2-4 sessions) a client should expect the strength of the colour to last for many years. Over a longer term, a client will very gradually begin to notice slight lightening (not discolour) of the treatment. When this occurs they can undergo a brief “touch up” session to restore any fading and secure many more years of their style.

Yes, those with grey hair can still benefit from the scalp micropigmentation procedure. First, most clients are recommended to cut their hair to a short buzzed length. When this is done, grey hair does not appear as grey because the hair root itself is darker. Hair only shows grey as it gets longer. Second, we use a grey-scale pigment that can be adjusted in shade to blend with lighter hair tones. We simply create a lighter dilution for blending into the existing grey hairs.

Yes! We are able to match the shade of our pigment to a wide range of skin tones. Whether you are Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, or Pacific Islander and much more – scalp micropigmentation can work for you.

Hair transplant surgery can be performed prior to this technique but also after the technique if further hairs are required or desired. Because we are trained hair transplant surgeons, SMP can be offered as part of a range of therapies to manage any future hair loss.

Cost for medical SMP is $495 per hour (inc. GST).
